Non-gaussianity vs. non-linearity of cosmological perturbations

چکیده

Following the discovery of the cosmic microwave background, the hot big-bang model has become the standard cosmological model. In this theory, small primordial fluctuations are subsequently amplified by gravity to form the large-scale structure seen today. Different theories for unified models of particle physics, lead to different predictions for the statistical properties of the primordial fluctuations, that can be divided in two classes: gaussian and non-gaussian. Convincing evidence against or for gaussian initial conditions would rule out many scenarios and point us towards a physical theory for the origin of structures. The statistical distribution of cosmological perturbations, as we observe them, can deviate from the gaussian distribution in several different ways. Even if perturbations start off gaussian, non-linear gravitational evolution can introduce non-gaussian features. Additionally, our knowledge of the Universe comes principally from the study of luminous material such as galaxies, but galaxies might not be faithful tracers of the underlying mass distribution. The relationship between fluctuations in the mass and in the galaxies distribution (bias), is often assumed to be local, but could well be non-linear. Moreover, galaxy catalogues use the redshift as third spatial coordinate: the resulting redshift-space map of the galaxy distribution is non-linearly distorted by peculiar velocities. Non-linear gravitational evolution, biasing, and redshift-space distortion introduce non-gaussianity, even in an initially gaussian fluctuation field. I will investigate the statistical tools that allow us, in principle, to disentangle the above different effects, and the observational datasets we require to do so in practice.

Enhancement of Non-Gaussianity after Inflation

We study the evolution of cosmological perturbations on large scales, up to second order, for a perfect fluid with generic equation of state. Taking advantage of super-horizon conservation laws, it is possible to follow the evolution of the non-Gaussianity of perturbations through the different stages after inflation. We find that a large non-linearity is generated by the gravitational dynamics...

Non–Gaussianity from Inflation: Theory and Observations

This is a review of models of inflation and of their predictions for the primordial non–Gaussianity in the density perturbations which are thought to be at the origin of structures in the Universe. Non–Gaussianity emerges as a key observable to discriminate among competing scenarios for the generation of cosmological perturbations and is one of the primary targets of present and future Cosmic M...

Gauge-invariant temperature anisotropies and primordial non-Gaussianity.

We provide the gauge-invariant expression for large-scale cosmic microwave background temperature fluctuations at second-order perturbation theory. This enables us to define unambiguously the nonlinearity parameter f(NL), which is used by experimental collaborations to pin down the level of non-Gaussianity in the temperature fluctuations. Furthermore, it contains a primordial term encoding all ...

The inflationary prediction for primordial non-gaussianity

We extend the δN formalism so that it gives all of the stochastic properties of the primordial curvature perturbation ζ if the initial field perturbations are gaussian. The calculation requires only the knowledge of some family of unperturbed universes. A formula is given for the normalisation fNL of the bispectrum of ζ, which is the main signal of non-gaussianity. Examples of the use of the fo...

Cosmological Perturbations and Non-Gaussianities in Hořava-Lifshitz Gravity

We investigate cosmological perturbations and non-gaussianities in Hořava-Lifshitz theory of gravitation. In the UV limit, the scalar perturbation in Hořava theory is naturally scale-invariant, ignoring the details of the expansion of the universe. Thus one may relax the exponential inflation and the slow-roll conditions for the inflaton field. Moreover, in the absence of slow-roll conditions, ...
